Culling my tops...

When you can't do something truly useful, you tend to vent the pent up energy in something useless but available, like snappy dressing. ~Lois McMaster Bujold

So now that I've culled my kids toys, I'm moving on to the next headache in my life - my clothes. Now I've tried to cull my clothes before and its not really worked. Again it was a case of me viewing each item in the past ("oh but I wore/bought this at such a special event") or in the future ("but I might lose/gain enough weight to wear this").

Since I already have pictures and my own memories of every special event and I'm not truly planning to lose/gain weight or anything like that, then such thoughts are pretty useless and just well.... clutter.

So here's my new approach. This is how many tops/blouses I should have:

7 x short sleeve tops
7 x long sleeve tops
7 x tanks/no-sleeves tops

The above would take into account the 4 seasons and those tops should cater for work and play.

I've taken a pic of all my tops together. Yep, I just grabbed all of them and threw them on top of the coffee table. By the end of this goal, you should see a much smaller (and neater) pile...

Wish me luck!

UPDATE.......2pm, same day...

I did it!! I've culled my tops! I can now close my top drawer without having to pat it down. I also now have HEAPS of space in the wardrobe. Writing a list was definitely the way to go. Everytime I was tempted to "add" to the list, I just referred back to the list and reminded myself that 21 tops is MORE than enough for one person. Here are pics of what was left after the cull:

BUT WAIT there's more! ......5pm, same day

Since I had so much fun culling, I ended up culling the rest of my clothes!! A friend of mine came over to help me out and it really made a difference 'cause I would've had a lot more trouble letting go of my stuff if it wasn't for a second opinion. Like before, I wrote out a list. And I ended up culling more and having less than my list! The green writing is my original list, and the purple writing was what I ended up actually having.

3 x winter jumpers (aka sweaters) = 2 winter jumpers
4 x light jumpers = 1 light jumper
3 x business pants = 2 business pants (I will probably op shop 1 more pair)
3 x casual pants = 3 casual pants
3 x jeans = 3 jeans
2 x winter skirts
= 2 winter skirts
3 x summer skirts = 3 summer skirts
3 x summer dresses = 2 summer dresses
3 x winter dresses = 0 winter dresses (who wants to wear dresses in the winter anyway?)
3 x suits = 3 suits
1 x formal long dress = 1 formal long dress
2 x Winter coats = 1 cape and 1 winter coat
2 x Autumn/spring light coats = 1 light coat (I will now op shop for 1 more)
4 x pairs of PJs = 4 pairs of PJs
1 x ski suit = 1 ski suit

Now I won't bore everyone by taking pics of all the clothes I have left but I thought I'd take a pic of the bags of clothes I have culled:

To give away:

To sell (designer and maternity/breastfeeding clothes):

I am now a VERY HAPPY CAMPER. Now to convince my husband to do the same....

Wow! Great work Eilleen!

BTW, I'm very pleased to see the top I made in your kept pile! LOL! I'm so glad you like it!

Hey, nice goin' Eilleen. I really need to get into my wardrobe and do the same. Luckily my little sister is always very keen to pick through my culls, so all the good stuff that I "wince" at getting rid of, even though I know I will never wear it again, gets picked up by someone I love. With a little baby and big morgage, I know she is doubly appreciative.

Well done! I am envious of how neat your shelves must be now.

I had to pop back in to see how you went. :-) Wow you've really done a great job.

Thanks all!

Mel - that top is one of my favourite tops!! It was right up there in the to keep pile.

I'm now needing a good list of clothes for the kids. They have too many as well.

Then after that, I'm tackling my books (eek!)

Hi there, new reader here. Wow, that's very inspiring - I'm in the middle of moving and I think I might go through and cull some clothes as well. I like your idea of having lists rather than just "well I might wear this so I better keep it".

Good luck with the books...!

Oh HEY Gab!! Nice to see you here.

I'm a size 10 and I'll probably put the maternity and breastfeeding stuff on Buyforbaby and the rest on Ebay. I'll put them up probably on Sunday night if you're around!

You've done a lot better than I ever could. My problem is I do a cull and then the culled clothes sit in bags in my room for months. And my wardrobe is still totally full.

Which reminds me - I still have those jeans if you want them! LOL

We have been culling books this past week and now have several bags full. Now we have room on the shelves for bub's books!

This is great! I am going to reread it before doing my closet on the weekend. I did it recently, but had the same problem of waxing sentimental or 'but I might need it' over a bunch of stuff. I like the idea of setting a number of each that will force me to chose the best of the lot and then no more. I've hung on to too much stuff in my closet just because 'there's nothing really wrong with it' for example. Cheers
